Furniture has been my bread and butter since the fifties. In the showrooms of Grosvenor, a sofa is never just a sofa. Young men with new flats, and they all ask for quality. A retro armchair, gives them that. There was a velvet sofa that went to a townhouse in Chelsea, and the sofa aged but never gave way. That’s the point with retro. They flick through glossy catalogues, but they find themselves in Mayfair again. Modern things break, whereas vintage lasts.

Furniture mirrors the postcode. Chelsea wants polish, comfort accent chairs with plush sofas. Dalston experimental, with colourful sofas. That’s London. End of the day, accent chairs outlive their buyers. Mass production never delivers it. I still check the stitching for strength, and the real thing speaks. Classic pieces endure. Next time you flick through a catalogue, stylish upholstered seating pause. Pick up a retro armchair, and allow it to tell your story.
